Dead Famous
Vermeer

One of the most important paintings on display at Vienna's Museum of Fine Arts is Jan Vermeer's "The Art of Painting".

Seen today as one of the greatest artists, Vermeer died in 1675 in Delft bankrupt with only 35 known paintings to his name. Except for one collector his work was hardly known.

How did an obscure provincial painter's work become so sought after? Rosie Millard looks at how Vermeer became dead famous.
